Five Ways to Beat the Heat and Save Money

We are pretty sure most everyone here in Southwest Florida are interested in two things; saving money and staying cool (as in temperature, not the Fonze). We have taken a look specifically at things to do with your air conditioner before. While that is still important, we are going to broaden our focus to things around the house that can be done to save money. So today we would like to look at five ways to beat the heat and save money at the same time.

Turn the Lights Off

Unless you have some really special reason for needing the light on in a vacant room turn them all off when not in use. This is one of the most common and easy ways to save money.

Do Not Cool Empty Rooms

Turn all fans both ceiling and otherwise off when you leave a room. Cooling an empty room is wasteful. We know some of you do it to keep the room cool for your return but the fact is that it doesn’t require as much power to re-cool the room as it does to leave the fans on.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Air conditioning and heating are some of the most draining appliances on your power bill. Most people leave their thermostat at a certain temperature at night, when they leave, when they return and during the day. Programmable thermostats can be set to your family’s schedule and some feature remote applications in case there is a change in your routine. These are great because you can start cooling your home for example 30 minutes before returning home. This way your home is comfy when you arrive. Also children who can reach will sometimes change the settings. Having a remote or programmable thermostat allows you to correct the problem even when you are not home.

Seal Doors and Windows

Often cool air escapes through areas that are not sealed properly. This can be a do it yourself fix. Buy caulk from the hardware store and seal areas around windows and doors that you can see are slightly open.

Close Your Curtains

While we do recognize that sunlight is the best disinfectant it is not the best for your power bill. Heat from the sun requires your AC unit to work much harder than electric lights. Keep sunlight out and money coming in.
