5 Signs Your HVAC System Should Be Replaced

Whether you have a boiler or furnace, your heating and air systems are a large portion of the investment in your home. Understandably, most people opt not to replace their air conditioner, duct work, or heating systems unless absolutely necessary. Still, the last thing anyone wants is to be stuck in the middle of a heat wave or frigid temperatures with a system that cannot be repaired. Paying attention to the warning signs that your system will need to be upgraded gives you ample time to save and make an educated purchase for your next system.
Top Signs Your System Needs To Be Replaced
1. Age. Age is a fairly good indication that you’re nearing the maximum years on your system. For a boiler, the typical system lasts about 15 years, while a furnace can generally last 20. Your air conditioner should last about 15 years, as well. These time frames are not definitive – the actual amount of time your system is good for will often depend on use and maintenance. Well maintained systems can last longer. It is good to know the longevity of the system. Even if your furnace is functioning optimally at 20 years, you can plan ahead and start saving for the replacement rather than getting blindsided when it goes out.
2. Frequency of Repairs. These are large purchases so most homeowners will have systems repaired whenever there’s an issue, rather than opting to replace the whole system – at least until the problems are so severe that replacement is a necessity. However, when repairs become a frequent occurrence, it’s time to start looking into a new system.
3. Temperature. If you suddenly notice that your system isn’t maintaining the temperature throughout your house or that you have to keep changing the thermostat to keep all of the rooms comfortable, it can be a good sign that your system may need replacement. In some cases the problem may be repairable, depending on age.
4. Smell, Sound, and Dust – Oh My. All of these are warning signs of a malfunctioning system. If you smell burning when you turn on the heat, it might be the system burning off dust stuck in the vents but it can also be indicative of larger problems, especially if the smell never goes away. If your system is making odd noises that it’s never made before, that’s a sign for concern, and constant soot or dust around vents can also be a warning sign that the system needs maintenance.
5. Energy Bills. One of the best aspects about getting a new system is that they are more energy efficient and you will see a decrease in your utility bills. That being said, a swift increase in your bills for no known reason can indicate a problem with the system you have.
If you’re noticing one or several of these warning signs, it’s definitely time to have your system assessed and may be time for an upgrade.

I didn’t know that there are so many different things to look for when an air conditioner goes bad. The age of the unit, plus how often it needs to be repaired are pretty telling signs that it needs to be replaced. I like knowing what to look for so when I notice anything I can get it done right away.
